To Vlog or To Blog, What’s the Difference?

Escrito el por Carlos Corral

Content creation has become the daily bread and butter of the internet, and of course that includes digital marketing. No matter the platform, we can find content creators on practically any subject, whether they’re experts, fans, enthusiasts or simply people that want to express their opinion and share what they do. Currently, anybody can be a content creator and be a vlogger… or is it blogger? In reality, both terms, vlog and blog, are correct, and despite being related, they do not mean the same thing.

Video blog, blog or vlog?

The difference between blog and vlog is that someone doing a blog creates written content, while someone who has a vlog creates content through videos. However, both are content creators. Now, let’s look at some of the features of both of them so that the difference is even clearer.

It comes from the term weblog, coined in 1997 to describe those websites where people could write about different activities. As the years went by, this activity stopped being for the select few and more people decided to use it for fun and for other things like fashion.

A blog is a space for content creation where it can focus on one or more subjects. Its content can give advice, be educational, give a review, opinions or thoughts on any given topic.

A key factor of blogs is that the content appears in inverse chronological order, meaning that at the top we’ll find the most recent blogs and as we scroll down, we’ll find older ones. Years later, social media sites imitated this trend.

Usually, it’s updated with posts every so often, being monthly, weekly, or daily. Simply the time period the creator chooses.

The Decadence of the Blog

The person who writes a blog and creates content on a blog is called a blogger. It’s a hobby, a past-time and a profession which has taken off over the end of the last century and at the start of this one. But this popularity has wavered with the arrival of social media.

Despite this, blogs are still going, and many companies use them within their marketing strategies to gather more leads and to better positioning. The secret to maintaining a blog is a good SEO strategy. So, what now, do we choose to blog or vlog? Let’s first look at what a vlog is.

What is a vlog?

Over time, audiovisual content in the digital world started to take off and as such, became very popular.

We can find videos on anything and everything, but an interesting process emerged when it first started. People who beforehand were writing blogs decided to export their content to the audiovisual field. People started making videoblogs, also known as vlogs. Now, instead of writing your feelings or ideas, you can express them right in front of the camera.

In the same way with blogs, these videos started to get followers that constantly visited the platform to see the most recent content. And just like with blogs, videos could be uploaded periodically to have new content coming out cyclically, whenever the creator chooses.

This created a feeling of closeness between the vlogger and the follower, allowing for this format to spread far and wide.

Platforms like Youtube helped this type of content creator grow. They were called vloggers, leading to the arrival of the first influencers, called youtubers. They’ve created a large niche for themselves, many of them becoming celebrities. This is due to the fact that when repeating the same format used for blogs, they started to turn themselves into the perfect opportunity for brands to find new channels for exposure and spreading awareness.

So, blogs or vlogs? You should compare and evaluate each one and see what format is best for your brand or company. You can also try using both. Good luck!
